Welcome to the Crow's Nest Artist Residency.
We are located on 40 acres of beautiful pasture and woodlands nestled in the heart of the southern Appalachian Mountains. Here on the farm you will have a chance to unwind, take a hike up to the ridge, catch your breath and reconnect with the natural world. The property was once a mid-century working tobacco farm but is now occupied by several private homes as well as the artist residency space. The renovated studio apartment is located in an old fiber arts studio and loom house. The building is complete with its own kitchenette, composting toilet bathroom, propane wall heater, electricity, and upstairs bedroom. The farm is 18 miles from the town of Hot Springs, NC which is located on the famous Appalachian Trail and is also home to the historic natural Hot Springs Spa. We are also 13 miles from the quaint yet vibrant arts haven of Marshall, NC which is home to the Madison County Arts Council, The Marshall High Artist Studios, the Golden Hour Arts Collective, Flow artist gallery, Madison Natural health food store, and the Magic Town Yoga Studio.
At the Crow's Nest our objective is to offer a nurturing work environment to our visiting artists where they can explore their own self-led creative projects. Ultimately we are a fiber arts/ textile makers space, however we welcome other creative mediums as well including writing, collage arts, basket weaving and "small scale" woodworking and painting. The studio space comes equipped with a Schacht Baby Wolf floor loom, loom shuttles, tapestry beater combs, reed and heddle hooks, a spinning wheel, a yarn warping mill, yarn ball winder, a sewing machine, fabric cutting table, handheld fabric rotary cutter and a weaving and fiber arts resource library.
We offer a 1-week, 2-week, 3-week, or 4-week long farm stay ($200/ week). Available dates are on a first come first serve basis. Guests cover their own food, travel, and supply costs. A free shuttle is available upon request from either the Asheville airport or the Asheville Greyhound bus station (55 minute drive time.)
